St. Bernard de Clairvaux Church in North Miami Beach incorporates the surviving cloister and monastic rooms of a medieval Cistercian monastery founded in Sacramenia, Segovia, by Alfonso VII of Castile and León between 1133 and 1141. Active for nearly 700 years, the abbey ended monastic life in the 1830s after the Ecclesiastical Confiscations of Mendizábal. In 1926 William Randolph Hearst bought and exported major parts of the complex to the United States, but reconstruction stalled after shipping problems and years of storage. Rebuilt in northern Miami in 1952, with some additions from other Spanish buildings, it later became an Episcopal church and historic attraction.
