Built in 1925 during the Florida Land Boom, this fountain marked the entrance to the Fulford-by-the-Sea subdivision, now the city of North Miami Beach. Constructed at a cost of $15,000, it was intended to be the first of five fountains marking the subdivision's entrances. Designed in the Classical Revival Style, it features distinctive unicorn figures, a tile mosaic dome, and cast stone made to simulate natural cut stone blocks. Standing 32 feet tall, it is one of the tallest fountains in south Florida. The Great Miami Hurricane of 1926, a category four storm with winds over 130 mph, devastated south Florida, caused approximately 350 deaths, frightened future investors, and stalled development of the area for many years. Although this fountain survived the hurricane, the other planned fountains were never built. In 1983 it was designated a historical site by Miami-Dade County, and in 2010 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also featured in the official seal of the city of North Miami Beach as a symbol of the city's history.
