Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance Light stands at the offshore end of the breakwater at the mouth of the Portage River in Michigan’s Keweenaw region, marking the lower entrance to the waterway. Its history grew from navigation improvements that began after dredging in 1860, with range lights added in 1868 and later offshore works and replacement towers. The present lighthouse was built in 1919–1920 as part of a broader modernization tied to a new inner harbor, using the earlier pierhead light’s fourth-order Fresnel lens. Automated in 1973 and later updated, it remains a notably complete example of early 20th-century Great Lakes lighthouse engineering.
