When he traveled to this area in 1824, James Fenimore Cooper was impressed by the cave behind the Hudson River at Glens Falls. In the early chapters of his 1826 novel The Last of the Mohicans, Hawkeye and the Mohicans, Chingachgook and his son Uncas, use the cave to hide the party they rescued from Magua and his Huron warriors. The rescued group includes Major Heyward, David Gamut, and Alice and Cora Munro. The Hurons discover them and a battle follows. After their canoe and ammunition are stolen, Hawkeye and the Mohicans escape by swimming downstream, while the rest are captured and taken south toward a spot near modern-day Ballston Spa. Along the way, Cora remembers Hawkeye's instructions and bends aside twigs so Hawkeye and the Mohicans can follow her trail.
