Chub Sandhill Natural Area Preserve in Sussex County, Virginia, protects 1,066 acres along the Nottoway River, where low sandhills and riparian wetlands support plant communities now uncommon in this part of the state. Despite widespread loss of the region’s original vegetation, the preserve retains notable remnants such as queen’s delight, golden puccoon, hoary scurf-pea, sand post oak, and native legumes that reflect an older sandhill ecosystem linked to longleaf pine country farther south. Frequent fire once sustained these communities, so prescribed burning has been used since 1998, and longleaf pine was reintroduced beginning in 2007 across 320 acres.
