During his campaign for Illinois Senate in 1858, Abraham Lincoln spoke on two separate occasions to the citizens of Macomb and McDonough County on these grounds: first on August 25th to a packed courtroom inside the courthouse that once stood on the spot of the current building, and again on October 25th on the lawn in inclement weather to a soaked audience of more than 4,000 spectators.
