Cloverport became an important shipping point beginning in 1798, when Joe Houston came from Virginia, built a home, and started a trading and shipping business. Flatboats carried Kentucky tobacco and other goods for sale in New Orleans, and the boats were sold as lumber. Men returned over the Natchez Trace. Houston operated the first ferry here in 1802. Shipping increased, and steamboats came into use in 1820.
