Campbell County was established in 1806 and was reportedly named in honor of Col. Arthur Campbell, a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses who commanded the 70th Regiment Virginia Militia in the Revolution and served as commissioner for negotiation of Indian treaties in 1781. Kentucky is an Iroquois word meaning Meadow Land. Before 1750, Indian tribes visited it from as far west as the Rocky Mountains. The first white settlement was at Harrodsburg in 1744. Kentucky was the second district west of the Alleghenies to be settled and the first, in 1792, to become a state.
