On August 5, 1850, Giles S. Isham characterized the route to West Carson Canyon as crossing a high, sloping, stony hill that descended toward the river, then dropping down a steep hill to a canyon or pass creek, where he said the first real struggle began as travelers went through the first range of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
