Methow Rapids U-Bolt
Transportation
4
An iron U-bolt embedded in this rock helped many Columbia River sternwheelers pull themselves through the Methow rapids a mile downstream. During spring runoff, the rapids boiled, and crews fastened a cable to the U-bolt ring ashore. As a steam-powered winch wound in the cable under the captain's cursing, the panting, shuddering vessel finally emerged at the head of the rapids.
