The Battle of Olustee Union Memorial honors the officers and soldiers of the United States Army who fell in the Battle of Olustee on February 20, 1864, and it replaced an original wooden memorial erected at the site in May 1866. Its inscriptions invoke unity, peace, and devotion to country, and urge the living to profit by the example of the dead. The participating units named are Colonel W B Barton's brigade, including the 47th, 48th, and 115th New York Volunteers; Colonel J Montgomery's command, including the 1st North Carolina Volunteers U.S.C.T. and the 54th Massachusetts Volunteers; Colonel J R Hawley's brigade, including the 7th Connecticut Volunteers, 7th New Hampshire Volunteers, and 8th U.S.C.T.; Colonel G.V. Henry's command, including the 40th Massachusetts Mounted Infantry, Battery B, 1st U.S. Horse Artillery, and the Independent Battalion Massachusetts Cavalry; and Captain J. Hamilton's command, including Battery E, 3rd U.S. Artillery, Battery M, 1st U.S. Artillery, and Battery C, 3rd Rhode Island Artillery.
