The Magdalena Mountains to the west are topped by South Baldy at 10,783 feet and Magdalena Peak at 8,152 feet, while the La Jencia plain to the east is bisected by Water Canyon three miles below. Along the edge of the mountains, the bench of the Magdalena Fault divides the uplifted mountains from the plains below.
