Built in 1948, Miller Stadium became the home of the Crowley Millers, who played in South Louisiana's semi-pro Teche League and the professional Gulf Coast and Evangeline Leagues from 1948 to 1957. The team drew strong local support and set league attendance records with more than 100,000 fans in 1952, 1953, and 1954. In 1950, pitcher Rusty Walters won 30 games and led the Millers to the Gulf Coast League pennant. In 1951, Andy Strong was killed by lightning during a game in Alexandria. The Millers had their best season in 1952, winning both the pennant and the playoffs. In 1956, George Brunet won 7 of 8 games and pitched a no-hitter before going on to the major league Kansas City A's. Hurricane Audrey struck in 1957 and severely damaged many parks, and the league finished that season with four teams. The league folded in 1958, and the ballpark was purchased by the City of Crowley for its recreation department. Renovated in 1998, it now serves youth players in the recreation department, local high schools, American Legion, and semi-pro teams.
