On Oct. 19, 1864, Gen. John B. Hood, commanding the Dept. of Tennessee and Georgia for the Confederate Army, made his headquarters in this house during his retreat from Atlanta to Tennessee via Gadsden. His army numbered approximately 40,000 troops.
