Born in Danielsville on Nov. 1, 1815, Crawford W. Long became a highly educated doctor and a very skilled surgeon. Just beginning to practice in Jefferson, he reached the conclusion that ether may make surgery painless. On March 30, 1842, the world's first painless operation became a reality when Doctor Long carefully removed a cyst from the neck of James Venable.
