On December 14, 1776, the citizen soldiers of Amwell Township, commanded by Captain John Schenck, met on this field and drove off a column of the British 16th Light Dragoons after killing their commander, Cornet Francis Geary. These men served throughout the "War of American Independence," and Francis Geary's gravesite is noted nearby.
