Horn Island Light guided vessels through Horn Island Pass, the most direct water route to Pascagoula, and over time it was moved and rebuilt repeatedly as erosion and storms threatened its site. First erected in 1874 on Horn Island, it was moved in 1880, replaced in 1887, and moved again in 1900. Disaster struck in the Mississippi hurricane of 1906, which destroyed the lighthouse and killed keeper Charles Johnsson, his wife, and daughter. A new light was built in 1908 near Petit Bois Island, where it became widely known as the Petit Bois Light. Automated in 1951, it was discontinued in 1961 and abandoned.
