In the Texas Hill Country west of Austin, this park preserves the places most closely connected to Lyndon B. Johnson’s life, from his birthplace and boyhood home in Johnson City to the LBJ Ranch on the Pedernales River. The two districts trace his early years, family background, adulthood, and presidency, including the ranch retreat known as the Texas White House. Unlike many presidential sites, it was kept as a working ranch in keeping with Johnson’s wishes, with historic homes, family cemetery, and ranch landscape still central to its meaning. The park was established in 1969 and later redesignated in 1980.
