Glen Canyon Dam was dedicated on September 22, 1966, as part of the Colorado River Storage Project by First Lady Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson, with Stewart L. Udall serving as Secretary of the United States Department of the Interior and Floyd E. Dominy as Commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation. The reservoir behind the dam was named Lake Powell in honor of Major John Wesley Powell, who led scientific exploration parties down the Green and Colorado Rivers in 1869 and 1871-72, later became a leader in government science programs, headed the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of American Ethnology, and advocated land and water conservation policies that resulted in the passage of the Reclamation Act of 1902.
