The Colorado River Storage Project Act of 1956 helped drive the development of the Upper Colorado River Basin states by providing long-term regulatory storage of water and supporting water management and hydropower generation in the basin. Congress passed the act on April 11, 1956, and within six months construction began on Glen Canyon Dam and Flaming Gorge Dam. The Navajo Unit followed in 1957, and the Wayne N. Aspinall Unit in 1962. Glen Canyon Dam was later recognized for 25 years of service to the American people in fulfilling the dream of the Colorado River Storage Project, and it received the American Society of Civil Engineers' 1964 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement award in a national competition.
