Mount Ireland
Nature
Mount Ireland, in eastern Oregon near Granite, rises 8,321 feet in the Elkhorn Range of the Blue Mountains. It is the westernmost and lowest summit in that range above 8,000 feet and ranks as Oregon’s 71st highest peak with at least 500 feet of clean prominence. Once called Bald Mountain, it was renamed in 1917 through a joint effort by local citizens and the U.S. Forest Service to honor Henry Ireland, longtime supervisor of the Whitman National Forest, who died in 1916. The mountain also bears traces of the region’s gold-mining past and today is a summer and fall hiking destination within the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest.
