Sturgis's longest-existing bank was founded on March 7, 1892, at 106 W. Chicago as Citizens and later became the Sturgis branch of FirstMerit Bank. In 1924, it opened its first building at 100 E. Chicago, a 40-by-10-foot facility built on the site where the Sturgis House, a motel owned by original settler Judge John Sturgis, had burned down in 1915. The bank expanded this building in 1966 and 1998.
