Pierre Bottineau built this house in 1854, four years before Minnesota became a state, making it the first frame house built within the original confines of Maple Grove Township. Bottineau, one of Minnesota's most legendary historical figures, contributed to the state's early development through his work as a voyageur, trader, interpreter, guide, and scout. Historic maps show that the house originally stood near the site of today's Osseo Junior High School. Since the Bottineau family last lived there, it has been moved at least three times and was most recently located on Zachary Lane, about 2 miles east of its present site. The Minnesota Department of Transportation rediscovered the house during environmental studies for the Highway 610 expansion and, to preserve the structure and remove it from the highway's proposed path, coordinated its move to this site on August 5, 2009. It was then being restored to its original 1854 appearance, after which ownership was to pass to Three Rivers Park District for preservation as a historic feature within Elm Creek Park Reserve, with a public opening scheduled for 2010.
