Victory Memorial Drive honors 568 residents of Hennepin County who gave their lives in defense of liberty in the Great War of 1914-1918. On Sunday, November 11, 1928, the tenth anniversary of the signing of the armistice ending the World War, the citizens of Hennepin County assembled under the auspices of the Memorial Commission and the American Legion to dedicate crosses marking trees previously dedicated to the 568 World War dead of Hennepin County and the ten G.A.R. posts of Minneapolis. It was rededicated on May 31, 1976, in memory of all Hennepin County service persons who lost their lives in service to their country during armed American conflicts, and again on June 11, 2011, with the pledge never to forget the sacrifice of those who served in the Great War.
