Manuel F. Correllus State Forest is a 5,100-acre protected area in central Martha’s Vineyard, mostly in West Tisbury and Edgartown, surrounding Martha’s Vineyard Airport on three sides. Established in 1908 as the Heath Hen Reserve, it was created to save the heath hen, though the species disappeared by 1938 and was later declared extinct. Renamed for superintendent Manuel F. Correllus, who served from 1948 to 1987, the forest preserves grasslands, heathlands, pine barrens, and woodlands in the Atlantic coastal pine barrens ecoregion. Shaped by repeated fire, it has become a major site for habitat restoration, fuel management, and recreation.
