First Baptist Church, established in 1874, is the oldest African-American congregation in the city of Reidsville. Its Gothic revival-style building stood at 401 South Scales Street adjacent to this site. The building was added to the National Register of Historical Properties on December 11, 1986. It was also included in Reidsville, North Carolina: An Inventory of Historical and Architectural Resources and The Rich Heritage of African-Americans in North Carolina, published by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources in 1981 and 2000, respectively.
