Schunemunk Mountain, the highest peak in Orange County, New York, rises 1,664 feet along a long ridge spanning Blooming Grove, Cornwall, and Woodbury. Its distinctive double crest, Barton Swamp cleft, and spur called High Knob shape a landscape whose streams drain toward the Hudson and Ramapo rivers. Formed from sedimentary deposits rather than the nearby Hudson Highlands' geology, it also carries deep human history: its Lenape-derived name means “excellent fireplace,” the Lenni Lenape had a village on its northern tip, and Revolutionary War skirmishes occurred there. Today it is a major hiking and recreation area, though only parts are publicly protected.
