North Carolina was colonized in 1585-87 by the first English settlers in America, was permanently settled about 1650, and was the first to vote readiness for independence on Apr. 12, 1776. South Carolina was formed in 1712 from part of Carolina, which was chartered in 1663, was first settled by the English in 1670, and was one of the 13 original states.
