Captain Sheldon O. Hall, Putnam County, Ohio's only World War II flying ace pilot, served in the U.S. Marine Air Corps with Fighter Squadron VMF 213 at Guadalcanal in the South Pacific, flying an F4U-Corsair and completing over 45 combat missions. On July 18, 1943, his plane was shot down, and he was later awarded the Purple Heart.
