On September 20, 1863, at 2 p.m., Major General Thomas C. Hindman's Division of Polk's Corps entered the fighting as Anderson's Brigade reached General Bushrod Johnson's position near Vittetoe's and joined the assault on Snodgrass Hill on Johnson's right. Deas' and Manigault's brigades soon joined Johnson and formed on his left, with Deas first occupying the ridge west of Vittetoe's and south of the gorge near that house before wheeling to the right and moving against Snodgrass Hill, while Manigault took position on his right opposite the gorge in that hill. Anderson's Brigade remained on the right of Johnson's Division. The three brigades of Hindman's Division fought with Johnson's and McLaws' Divisions in a persistent but unsuccessful assault on Snodgrass Hill about 3 p.m. The attack was renewed after 4 p.m. and continued until sunset, when Steedman's Division withdrew to the next ridge in the rear, followed by these troops to the foot of the slope before that second ridge. The division's total strength in action was 6,122, and its killed, wounded, and missing on September 19 and 20 totaled 1,850, a loss of 30.22 percent.
