On September 20, 1863, at 3 p.m., Deas' Brigade of Hindman's Division in Polk's Corps, commanded by Brigadier General Zach. C. Deas and composed of the 18th, 22nd, 25th, 39th, and 50th Alabama regiments, the 17th Alabama Battalion Sharpshooters, and Dent's Alabama Battery, successfully attacked portions of Davis's and Sheridan's divisions, then advanced to the crest west of the Crawfish Springs road and, wheeling right, formed on the left of Manigault's brigade. In the general advance at 3:30 p.m., it ascended the spur of Snodgrass Hill just northwest of the Vittetoe house and for nearly two hours unsuccessfully attacked the right of the Union position. It then fell back to the foot of the hill, and when it advanced again, found that the enemy had retired.
