Near this house stood the mansion of Le Chevalier Louis Malarcher (1754-1841), a political refugee of the French Revolution who became an influential citizen of St. James Parish. The original mansion was destroyed in 1890 by a levee break that created Nita Crevasse one-quarter mile north. In 1891, Willie Malarcher, a grandson of the Chevalier, built the present house, although some features date from an earlier period.
