· Here Rests In Honored Glory An American Soldier Known But To God
Military
About 1918, toward the end of World War I, a train stopped at the Sweeny depot and a very ill soldier got off. The train left without him, and he was found wandering the streets very sick. A doctor could not save him, and he died at Rosie's Hotel near the gazebo on Main Street. He was buried there as an unknown, and the spot was unmarked and mostly forgotten until 2000, when a memorial stone was placed and a service was held on Memorial Day.
