In 1958, LSU completed its first perfect season since 1908 and won the first national title in school history under head coach Paul Dietzel. Building on a previous 5-5 season, Dietzel's innovative three-platoon system—the White Team, the Go Team, and the Chinese Bandits—revolutionized college football. The Tigers went 6-0 in SEC play, including a Homecoming game against Florida before the first sellout crowd in Tiger Stadium history, then finished 11-0 overall by defeating Clemson 7-0 in the 1959 Sugar Bowl.
