In March 1931, City Manager V. J. Hultquist informed city commissioners that work had begun on a proposed lake in Springbrook Park adjacent to the swimming pool. Initially known as Mirror Lake, it was later named the Lily Pond. Clearing for the present Duck Pond began in July 1952, and the small dam was built in May 1953. In December 1953, the pond was stocked with 4,000 bream, followed by 400 largemouth bass in May 1954, and fishing was first allowed on June 7, 1955. In 1954, weeping willow trees were planted on the Springbrook Road side of the pond and maple trees on the opposite side. Mirror Lake, later known as the Lily Pond, was located between the pool and the present Duck Pond, and the Lily Pond featured pink and white water lilies. In 1967, views showed both the Duck Pond and the Lily Pond before Alcoa Elementary School was constructed on the athletic practice field in the background; the school opened in 1971.
