Madonna of the Trail is a National Society Daughters of the American Revolution memorial to the pioneer mothers of the covered wagon days. The National Road was completed by the federal government to this point in 1839, and from this point westward it was built by the states through which it passes. This place is on the National Old Trails Road. Three miles southwest of here, General George Rogers Clark, commanding Kentucky frontiersmen, vanquished the Shawnee Confederacy on August 8, 1780, resulting in the opening of the Northwest Territory.
