Tecumseh - the Great Shawnee Leader
Springfield, Ohio
History
1
Tecumseh, a Shawnee leader renowned as a warrior and charismatic orator, was born in March 1768 to Puckeshinewa and Methoataske at the Peckuwe village on the Mad River west of present-day Springfield, Ohio. He was present at the Battle of Peckuwe on August 8, 1780, but at age 12 was unable to take part. He soon became a warrior and fought against the Americans in 1782-1783 with his brother Chiksika. Tecumseh later led a party of Shawnee warriors at Fallen Timbers but refused to participate in the Treaty of Greenville. From his base in northern Indiana, he traveled from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico promoting his Pan-Indian Federation to halt American expansion. Native Americans under Tecumseh took a stand at the Battle of the Thames on October 5, 1813, where Tecumseh and his dreams were killed.
