Since 2010, Stonington residents have harvested their own organically grown produce at the Stonington Human Services Community Garden. After resident input and discussions with the Human Services team identified an opportunity to increase access to sustainable, local food sources, plans officially began in August 2020 to expand the community garden program with a second location at Stonington Town Hall that included ADA-accessible raised beds and walkways. Town staff, community volunteers, and donors collaborated on the project, with the Director of Economic and Community Development and local Eagle Scout Troop 9 leading volunteers in constructing the garden beds and fencing, the Department of Public Works preparing the site, and the Stonington Transfer Station providing compost. Support from the Sustainable CT Community Match Fund and more than 50 community donors helped raise nearly $10,000 for the project. The two locations improve community access to healthy, local produce and help reduce food costs.
