Barnegat Light was tended by a succession of lighthouse keepers and lamplighters from 1835 to 1940. Henry V. Low served from 1835 to 1838, followed by John H. Low from 1838 to 1839, Ellen S. Low in 1839, Garret H. Herring from 1839 to 1841, Jeremiah Spragg from 1841 to 1846, John Allen from 1846 to 1849, John Warren from 1849 to 1851, Charles Collins from 1851 to 1853, Joseph H. Townsend from 1853 to 1854, and James Fuller from 1854 to 1861. During Fuller's tenure, the station transitioned from the first lighthouse to a temporary wooden tower, then to the current lighthouse. Hiram M. Horner served from 1861 to 1862, A.B. Brown from 1862 to 1866, John Kelley from 1866 to 1873, William C. Yates from 1873 to 1875, Joshua H. Reeves from 1875 to 1885, Thomas Bills from 1885 to 1896, Abraham G. Wolf in 1896, W.T. Woodmansee from 1896 to 1915, Clarence H. Cranmer from 1915 to 1926, Andrew E. Applegate from 1926 to 1928 as the last official lighthouse keeper, Robert E. Applegate from 1928 to 1932 as lamplighter, and William E. Rothas from 1932 to 1940 as lamplighter.
