The Jewish Museum of New Jersey occupies Ahavas Sholom at 145 Broadway in Newark, a 1923 Classical Revival synagogue and the city’s longest continually operating synagogue. Founded in 2003 and opened in 2007, it was created to fill the absence of a statewide Jewish museum and to interpret more than 400 years of Jewish life in New Jersey. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 for its artistic, religious, and social significance. A notable feature is its hand-carved Aron Kodesh, made in the 1870s for a New York City congregation, installed in Newark in the 1920s, and regarded as the oldest in New Jersey.
