On November 30, 1907, Seattle City Councilman Thomas Plummer Revelle dedicated the market to the people, calling it a benefit for them and their children and charging them to defend, protect, and uphold it. He urged them to ensure that those who occupied it treated them fairly, that no extortion was permitted, and that its purpose was faithfully maintained. Revelle called the day one of the greatest in Seattle's history but only a beginning, expressing confidence that the city would soon have one of the greatest markets in the world and declaring that no political or commercial grafters would destroy it.
