Adam Barner migrated from Switzerland in 1758, first locating between Philadelphia and Lancaster. In 1767, he settled on the farm where Barner's Church now stands. He married the widow of John Bunn, and they had two sons. One son, Henry Barner, settled in Sugar Valley, Clinton County, Pennsylvania, and married Susanna Bunce. The other son, George Barner, married a Miss Dubbs and remained near Barner's Church, where most of his descendants have resided unto this day. George Barner, a son of Henry Barner, returned to this vicinity about 1820, married Lydia Lahr, and many of his descendants also reside near Barner's Church.
