Santa Fe Prairie is one of Illinois' finest prairie remnants. Prairies once covered roughly half of Illinois, but today only a few scattered sites remain. Other prairies in the I&M Canal National Heritage Area include Lockport Prairie Nature Preserve and Goose Lake Prairie near Morris, and Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie in Joliet is undergoing restoration.
