The invention of the hand cultivator, or plow, made turning the soil in spring much easier. This model was pushed through the topsoil to prepare a large vegetable garden for planting. The garden was needed to feed an entire family with fresh produce, and many of the vegetables were canned or preserved for the winter months when none were available.
