Carrizo Peak
Nature
Carrizo Peak is a 9,626-foot mountain in central New Mexico and the highest point of Carrizo Mountain, rising prominently about nine miles east-northeast of Carrizozo. Its summit stands out from U.S. Highways 54 and 380 because it climbs roughly 3,600 feet above the surrounding terrain in just 2.5 miles, giving it a steep, commanding profile. Reached by the 2.5-mile Carrizo Peak Trail, it lies in the Rio Grande watershed, with Nogal Peak as the nearest higher summit. The mountain is also notable for its cool semiarid climate, with hot summer days, cooler nights, afternoon thunderstorms, and winters that often bring snow.
