In the early 1900's, the country estate called Wildwood stood seven miles west of the city limits on the Creve Coeur electric car line. Charles D. Garnett purchased it in 1903, and the property included a brick home, a gardener's cottage and ice house, and a large stable with carpenter and blacksmith shop. Louis A. Cella bought the estate in 1909, and after his death in 1918 it was sold to Frank Lind and his wife, Della, who lived there until his death in 1939. Della Lind and other heirs sold Wildwood in 1944 to the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Holy Family, which developed the estate at 2500 Ashby Road into Holy Family Seminary for the North American Province. For 47 years the Missionaries of the Holy Family resided there, offering both minor seminary education for grades 9-12 and major seminary college-level courses. The property was expanded with third-floor dormitories and private rooms in the main residence, a convent completed in 1947, a chapel extension completed in 1954, converted dormitories in the former carriage house by the summer of 1967, and a gymnasium completed and dedicated in May 1968. The print shop produced seminary materials and The Messenger periodical, and other features included a rebuilt bookstore, a residence at 10415 Midland used as the Provincial Office and Residence, a relocated bridge from the Saint Louis 1904 World's Fair, a man-made pond enlarged by the Missionaries, and the establishment of Holy Family Cemetery during the seminary years. As attendance declined in the 1970's, the minor seminary was discontinued, though the major seminary remained. In 1991, after 47 years of education on the property, the seminary closed, the house of studies moved to San Antonio, Texas, and the Ashby Road and Midland Avenue property was sold; today the City of Overland owns the entire seminary property. The Missionaries of the Holy Family had been founded on September 28, 1895 in Grave, Holland by Father John Berthier, and after arriving in the United States in 1924 they served in Minnesota, Saint Louis, New Braunfels, Mexico, Canada, many Saint Louis-area parishes and institutions, and more than 22 countries worldwide.
