Talcott Mountain Science Center in Avon, Connecticut, was established in 1967 under a U.S. Department of Education program by leaders from the Avon Public School district. Set on Talcott Mountain at the former Project Nike radar station HA-85, it transformed a Cold War defense site into a science campus with classrooms, laboratories, observatories, a weather research station, and Connecticut’s largest teaching planetarium. The nonprofit combines public programs, school partnerships, teacher training, online resources, and its own academy, serving students and educators in central Connecticut. Its work extends beyond the campus through a large Solar System model and broader educational and research initiatives, including the Talcott Mountain Research Institute.
