Caroline Quiner, the mother of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the “Little House” series of books, was born in a cabin here on December 12, 1839. She was the earliest known settler born in the Town of Brookfield. Her parents, Henry N. Quiner and Charlotte Tucker, purchased 80 acres north of this intersection on November 5, 1839. Henry Quiner died in 1845 in a shipwreck on Lake Michigan. In 1847 the family moved to Concord in Jefferson County, where Caroline met and married Charles Ingalls.
