These men gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country in a land far away so others could enjoy freedom: Leroy Clyde Schaneberg of Ashton, Illinois, in Laos; John Michael Babich of Franklin Grove, Illinois, in Thua Thien, South Vietnam; Dennis Eugene Dawson of Dixon, Illinois, in Thua Thien, South Vietnam; Roger Allen Scarbrough of Dixon, Illinois, in Quang Ngai, South Vietnam; Melvin Vernon Levan of Dixon, Illinois, in Quang Nam, South Vietnam; and Patrick Martin Dixon of Dixon, Illinois, in Long An, South Vietnam. Their service and dedication are forever honored. The words of Major Michael Davis O'Donnell of Springfield, Illinois, written on January 1, 1970, at Dak To, Vietnam, urge others to keep a place inside themselves for those who could no longer go on, to say they loved them, and to embrace the gentle heroes left behind; he was missing in action on March 24, 1970, and later listed as killed in action on February 7, 1978.
