Dixville Notch State Park is a 127-acre protected landscape in northern New Hampshire centered on the steep mountain pass where State Route 26 runs through a narrow gorge between Dixville Peak and Cave Mountain. Known more for scenery than facilities, it includes the gorge, waterfalls on two mountain brooks, and hiking trails leading toward nearby summits, while remaining open year-round without staffing or visitor services. The notch had gained notice for its beauty by 1866, when George Parsons opened the Dix House nearby, and later Henry Hale developed The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel, linking the pass to northern New Hampshire tourism. It also marks the divide between the Connecticut and Androscoggin watersheds.
